Novello Theatre – creating history since inception

Mamma Mia London
The Novello Theatre London that opened on 22nd May 1905 was designed by notable architect of the time, W.G.R. Sprague. At the time of its opening, it was called the Waldorf Theatre and was built as a twin to the Aldwych Theatre that was also designed by Sprague. The first owners of the venue were Shubert brothers of America and it was their maiden endeavour to the theatre world in Europe. The Novello Theatre witnessed its first success in 1913 with hosting of the Anglo Chinese play Mr Wu.

Mathesan Lang who later on went to own the Novello theatre gave one of his most successful performances in Mr Wu. Later on when he went on to write his memoirs, he named it Mr Wu looks back. After going through numerous name changes since the beginning, the venue was given its current name, the Novello Theatre by its present owners after Ivor Novello who once stayed in one of the flats above the venue. Some of the notable shows that have been hosted here include Arsenic and Old Lace,   A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum Sailor and Beware!

The currently running show at the Novello Theatre London is ABBA classic Mamma Mia. The musical has been directed by Phyllida Lloyd and is based on Catherine Johnson’s story. It is a picturesque island of Greece where the story takes place. Along with the title track, the musical features some of the greatest ABBA hits. The show is suitable for audiences of all genres and is ideal to cherish those strong ties that we share with our families.
